Why do I add pure L-Citrulline to my pre-workout?
Citrulline raises arginine and nitric-oxide markers in your blood. Whether that means more blood flow to working muscles is unproven; studies that measured it found no change. The benefit is small but real. In studies, people did about 6% more reps before failure, and some felt less sore the next day. Adding it to a pre-workout that's light on citrulline gets you to the doses the studies used.
What I like
- About 6% more reps before failure in studies
- May ease next-day soreness a little
- An easy way to top up a pre-workout that's light on citrulline
- One ingredient: L-citrulline. No flavour, no colour.
Downsides
- The effect is small, and you may not notice it.
- It lowers blood pressure a little. If you take blood-pressure medication, nitrates or erectile-dysfunction drugs, ask your doctor first.
- Unflavoured citrulline tastes sour and bitter, so mix it into something flavoured.
Adi's experience
Many pre-workouts have less citrulline than the studies used. I add 4 g of this pure powder to my pre-workout to get closer to the doses used in research.
