Two Tools That Change How You See Progress
One of the most frustrating things in fitness is not knowing what's realistic. Without context, progress feels either too slow or impossibly fast to judge. That's where FFMI and the Casey Butt formula come in. Together, they give you an honest, science-backed picture of where you are and where you can realistically get to — naturally.
What Is FFMI?
Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) is a measure of your muscle mass relative to your height. Think of it as a body composition version of BMI — but actually useful, because it strips out fat and focuses entirely on lean mass.
The formula is simple:
FFMI = Lean Body Mass (kg) ÷ Height (m)²
For context, here's roughly what different FFMI scores look like on a man:
- 17–18: Average, untrained
- 19–20: Fit, some training background
- 21–22: Athletic, dedicated lifter
- 23–24: Advanced, years of consistent training
- 25+: Elite natural physique (rare)
A landmark study (Kouri et al., 1995) found that natural athletes very rarely exceed an FFMI of 25. This is why 25 is widely considered the natural ceiling — not a hard rule, but a meaningful benchmark.
What Is the Casey Butt Formula?
While FFMI tells you where you are, the Casey Butt formula estimates where you could get to. Dr. Casey Butt spent years studying the physiques of pre-steroid-era champion bodybuilders and natural powerlifters to reverse-engineer the relationship between skeletal structure and muscular potential.
His formula uses your wrist circumference, ankle circumference, and height to estimate your maximum muscular bodyweight at roughly 5% body fat. These measurements are proxies for your bone density and skeletal frame — things you were born with and that determine how much muscle you can physically attach to your frame.
Why Bone Structure Matters
Larger bones mean larger attachment points for muscle. A person with 7-inch wrists has the structural potential to carry significantly more muscle than someone with 6-inch wrists, all else being equal. This isn't about excuses — it's about understanding your individual ceiling so you can train and eat accordingly.
Someone with a higher genetic potential may have 90–100kg of potential lean mass. Someone with a smaller frame might cap out at 75–80kg. Both are impressive. Both require years of consistent effort. But knowing the ceiling helps you stop comparing yourself to people with completely different genetic blueprints.
How to Use These Numbers
Use FFMI to track where you are on the muscular development spectrum. Use Casey Butt's estimate as a long-term north star — a goal that is genuinely achievable with years of natural training, good nutrition, and recovery.
If your current FFMI is 21 and your Casey Butt potential is 25, you have room to grow. If you're already at 24.5, you're operating close to your natural ceiling — and that's something to be proud of, not frustrated by.
