The Importance of Self-Care for Fathers in Canada
By Adi · April 5, 2026
Dads are terrible at self-care. Here's why that has to change — and how to start without feeling guilty about it.
You Can't Pour From an Empty Cup
It's a cliché because it's true. Canadian dads are chronically last on the priority list — and it's hurting their families, not helping them.
What Self-Care Actually Means for Dads
Forget spa days. Real self-care for dads looks like:
- 7-8 hours of sleep. Not negotiable. Your testosterone, mood, and cognitive function depend on it.
- Regular exercise. Not just for aesthetics — for mental health. The research is overwhelming.
- Time alone. Even 30 minutes of quiet time daily reduces cortisol and makes you a calmer parent.
- Social connection. Canadian men are in a friendship crisis. Make an effort to maintain guy friendships.
The Permission You Didn't Ask For
I'm giving it to you anyway: it is okay to prioritize your health. Your kids are watching. When they see their dad exercise, eat well, and take care of himself, they learn those habits too.
Start Small
Pick one thing this week. Sleep 30 minutes earlier. Walk for 20 minutes at lunch. That's it. Build from there.
