The Scale Is Lying to You

Step on a scale and you get one number. But that number is the sum of your bones, organs, water, fat, and muscle — all lumped together. It tells you almost nothing about the quality of your body composition or the direction your training is actually going.

Lean Body Mass (LBM) cuts through the noise. It's everything in your body except fat — muscle, bone, organs, water, and connective tissue. It's the number that actually tells you whether your training is working.

How LBM Is Calculated

The most accessible way to estimate LBM is using a body fat percentage estimate combined with total body weight:

LBM = Total Weight × (1 − Body Fat %)

For example, if you weigh 85kg at 15% body fat:

LBM = 85 × (1 − 0.15) = 85 × 0.85 = 72.25kg of lean mass

In our Tools section, we use the Boer formula for LBM estimation, which is based on height and weight and tends to be more accurate for trained individuals than simpler methods. For trained athletes carrying more muscle than average, we apply a correction factor based on sports physiology research to reduce underestimation.

Why LBM Matters More Than Scale Weight

Here's a scenario that plays out all the time: someone starts lifting and eating at maintenance. After 8 weeks, the scale hasn't moved. They're frustrated.

But when they track body fat percentage, they find they've lost 2kg of fat and gained 2kg of muscle. The scale said nothing changed. Their body changed dramatically.

This is called body recomposition — and it's completely invisible on a standard scale. LBM tracking reveals it.

LBM and Your Metabolism

Lean body mass is also the primary driver of your metabolic rate. Muscle tissue is metabolically expensive — it burns calories just to exist. The more LBM you carry, the higher your BMR, the more you can eat at maintenance, and the easier it is to stay lean long-term.

This is why crash diets are counterproductive. Severe calorie restriction causes the body to break down muscle for energy, reducing LBM — which lowers metabolism — which makes future fat loss even harder. Preserving LBM through adequate protein intake and resistance training is the most sustainable path to lasting body composition change.

Tracking LBM Over Time

You don't need a DEXA scan to track LBM meaningfully. Consistent body measurements, progress photos, and a reliable body fat estimation method (like the Navy method or skinfold calipers) give you enough signal to detect trends over 4–8 week blocks.

The goal isn't perfect accuracy — it's directional clarity. Is your LBM going up? Is fat going down? Are both moving the right direction? That's the feedback loop that keeps you making real progress, not just chasing a number on a scale.
