Most nutrition apps stop at grams. Hit your protein target, get a green tick, move on. But if you've ever wondered why some people seem to build muscle more efficiently on the same gram intake as others — protein quality is often part of the answer.

Our Protein Quality Score is a composite metric built into the Protein Optimizer tool. It combines four different dimensions of protein quality into a single, easy-to-understand score from 0 to 100. Here's exactly what it measures and why.

The Four Components

1. Protein Efficiency

This measures how much protein you're getting per 100 calories of food. A food that delivers 25g of protein per 100 kcal (like chicken breast) is far more efficient than one that delivers 5g per 100 kcal. High efficiency means you can hit your protein target without overshooting your calorie budget — critical when you're in a fat loss phase.

2. Macro Purity

This looks at what percentage of your total calories comes from protein versus fat and carbohydrates. A food that's 80% of its calories from protein scores high on purity. This matters when you need to hit a specific macro ratio — not just a calorie total.

3. Bioavailability

Bioavailability refers to how well the protein is absorbed and used by the body. This is where PDCAAS and DIAAS scores come in. Even if a food has a high protein content on paper, if the body can only absorb and use 60% of the amino acids, the effective protein intake is significantly lower. Our score applies known bioavailability ratings to each protein source.

4. Cost Efficiency (Optional)

When you enter cost data, the tool also calculates how much protein you're getting per dollar spent. This is particularly useful for planning meal prep on a budget — finding the highest-quality protein at the lowest cost.

How the Score Is Calculated

Each component is normalized to a 0–100 scale and then weighted to produce a final composite score. Bioavailability carries the heaviest weight because it most directly affects whether the protein you eat actually becomes muscle protein synthesis in your body.

A score above 80 indicates a high-quality, efficient protein source. Scores in the 50–80 range are decent but may benefit from pairing with complementary sources. Below 50 usually means the food is contributing protein, but other foods should be doing the heavy lifting in your diet.

Examples in Practice

  • Chicken breast: Score ~92. High efficiency, high purity, excellent bioavailability.
  • Greek yogurt: Score ~85. Strong across all dimensions, with some carbs from lactose reducing purity slightly.
  • Eggs: Score ~88. Near-perfect bioavailability. Lower efficiency due to fat content, but considered a gold-standard protein source.
  • Lentils: Score ~58. Good cost efficiency and moderate efficiency, but lower bioavailability and incomplete amino acid profile.
  • White rice: Score ~32. Low protein content per calorie, incomplete amino acid profile, low bioavailability.

Using the Score in Real Life

You don't need to eat only 90+ score foods. A varied diet with a mix of animal and plant proteins will naturally complement amino acid profiles and give you a healthy average score.
